Open frame generators are often used as the extra noise is not a problem and simple motors are not affected by small fluctuations in power supply.

For individual power tools a 2.5kva will provide 10 amps which is the minimum required to power larger power tools, such as circular saws and drills. Often they will come with both 230v Cee form blue plugs as well as the 110v Yellow Cee form plug for site use. They can be switched manually between voltages as required.

When more than one person is going to be using the supply suitably larger generators are available with multiple outlets. The size of the generator depends on how much power you will need at any one time. By avoiding switching on everything at once and by using more than one power hungry activity at a time you can keep the size of the generator to a minimum.
